Yea, today I drove a 1996 1.8L NA. N ot as well prepped as the 2000 I drove last time, but still a good Miata.
From the 1st run to the 5th run I gained 4.5 seconds. Still 2 seconds behind the owner of the car. I also got some data, the data is from my 3rd run. My best run was 47.428.

That’s because it’s easier to see the front of the car :p

You can say that, but I’m going to assume the motors broke, and
the owner was too cheap/lazy to replace to them. Maybe they even took out the motors while yelling “WEIGHT REDUCTION!”

The headlights up on an NA for autocrossing in an old trick. The theory goes that having the driver’s side light up ends up directing more fresh air to the factory intake snorkel right behind and below it (and that the extra drag with them up is de minimis at autocross speeds). I don’t recall if this has actually been scientifically verified, but nationally competitive miata drivers have been doing this with NA’s since the early 90's.
There’s also the idea the headlights up gives some very nice visual points marking the front corners of the car.
